After going through two of these units and experiencing the same issue on the third, I found a workaround that I can live with in exchange for having k-cup convenience.
Problems that I have experienced:
- Keurig platinum B70 brews one cup of coffee and then shuts off
- Keurig platinum B70 spits half of a cup of coffee out and then shuts off
- Keurgi platinum B70 does not brew at all
How did I fix this — quite simple to be honest.
Do this:
1. Turn off the Keurig b70
2. Remove the water tank
3. Place the water tank back on the unit and press very hard from the top so that you get a tight seal
4. Fill with water and test
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until you get a good seal
6. Once you have a working unit again, NEVER EVER remove the water tank. Fill the tank with a cup or some other jug like container.
7. Go back to your normal morning routine, free of expletives.

You know what? I have not been taking the water chamber out, due to too big and bulky and it is next to the sink. I just get a tall cup and refill it this way. So I figured maybe when I scooted the unit slightly to the side to refill it it lost the seal. I tried what you said to do and it did not work. So evidently our problems were not the same. We just had the same symptom.
I followed the Golden Rule of electronics: 1) I turned it off
2) Unplugged it for 30 secs. 3) Plugged back in. 4) Turned it on and restarted it and it made the notorious sounds as it did before and acted normally (?).
Before following your directions, I turned it on and it did not make any sounds. It said “Not ready” then later when it said “Ready” I put in a K-cup and the cup sizes flashed. I picked the size I wanted and it would not do anything. No noises, nothing. I followed your instructions then it would have a smaller in diameter hot flow of coffee, it was not making it’s regular sounds in the unit or at the point of exit sound (spewing). It was hot and then for a large cup of coffee the cup was 1/3 full of what it normally was.
The only thing that I can think of is that I made a cup of coffee and left it while getting ready for work. The unit was not turned off I don’t know for how long. I think I turned it off the next day or two.
Thanks, Nate, your fix worked for me! Now I can get back to making great coffee.
Thanks so much for the tip, it worked like a charm! I tried my typical retired Marine solution of yelling at it loudly and punching it to no avail. A deep breath and a good push on the tank and VOILA! Much appreciation from me and my mentally scarred B70!
Two possible approaches:
(1) A twist of Nate’s solution that has worked for me. Take the water reservoir off, hold it over the sink and press the valve on the bottom (on mine it is a small circular “button” near the front of the BOTTOM of the tank. It presses upward and water will come out, flowing past the finger that is pressing it. This valve gets stuck sometimes. Replace the tank, pressing firmly downward as you install it. I have to do this several times a year.
(2) Try the de-scaling procedure in your manual (flush with a full tank of vinegar, allow to rest a few hours, flush with 1 or two tanks of water to rinse)
This is great, we’ve suspected the problem was it not getting enough water. But it’s only a few months old and we’ve always used filtered and rested water in it. Before removing the reservoir I pushed down and it seemed too move farther. I wiped down the valve seating surfaces. I seated it firmly and all is well (for one cup so far). I saw other review/complaints where they went through several returns and was about to call customer service.
I got a warranty Keurig sent out to me at work because the B60 I had was stuck in this cycle where it would spit hot water back into the resevior with a lot of air bubbles and take forever to prime. Anyhoo, I took the unit home without the K-cup holder, with the intention of taking it apart and reassembling it into a Franken-Keurig (with some green LEDs and everything, yes, I do have too much free time) anyway, I thought I would test it and see if it was for sure broken. Well it worked perfectly the first time. For three months I tried to make it fail and it would not. So finally, I put the top back on it and gave it to my sister. Today it finally repeated the problem I was originally having. Took me a while to realize it, but the whole time I was trying to get it to fail, I was refilling it with a pitcher and not taking the resevior off. I passed on the advice, hopefully the problem has now been bypassed.
Sir, you are amazing. I was going immediately to step 7 plus the expletives under my breath. I put the resevoir on and pressed down until there was a small clicking type sound and voila it worked like new. Thanks so much! I can use my brain again!
I have to agree with David. You, sir, are amazing. I had had my unit for, count them, FOUR DAYS! I was so disappointed. But, as you said, I had kept taking the tank off. I did as you suggested and, I can make coffee again!!!! I am now at step 7 of your 7 step program and there are no longer “dirty” words in my house and my kids don’t have to make me put quarters in the “bad word jar”. Thanks much! LOL
Thanks loads- advice worked great. I examined the water inlet and saw small pieces of crud in it- probably stray coffee grounds. I unplugged the unit and took it to the sink and used the faucet to blast it clean. Dried it out and plugged it in- it works normally, perhaps with a little more noise than before (Pump damage perhaps? Faulty memory on my part?) but pups out a full 8 oz every time.
Any hints on keeping Toshiba mycafes running? (IMO, the best mill/drip machine ever made!)
Thanks Nate! I have a b70 that is 2 months old and this morning it brewed one cup of coffee and would not brew another. Following your advice worked like a charm.
Had my B70 since December ’10, only 1cup per day. I had the “no-brew” (even though it says it’s brewing) problem repeatedly over the last month, and will try the reservoir suggestions above. However, it has been behaving strangely in other ways as well. For example, I had just brewed a cup on the 12oz setting and removed the cup, when 5 seconds later it spewed out another 8-12oz (judging by how long it spewed.) Arghhhh!
My keurig coffee maker has no power to it. There is power to the outlet, and the switch in the back of the machine still does not turn on. Is there a reset button inside the keurig?
I bought a used B70 from a reseller on Amazon for $66, including shipping, and after a month it has worked flawlessly. I discovered there was no water temp selection in the menu and contacted the seller. He said I had received a B77 by error and he promptly sent a B70, telling me to just “hang onto” my B77. They are identical in appearance. Both have worked flawlessly. In fact I find the B77 quieter and think I prefer it. After reading about the many malfunctions and fixes I have confidence in knowing what to do in the event of a glitch. Yesterday UPS delivered a second B70 from the same reseller. I have no idea why, but now I have two B70s and a B77 for a total of $66. This thread will help if I ever need Nate’s solution to the water problem.
My B70 must just be crap. It’s my second one. Same problems as above, but nothing is helping. It now says de-scale “all day!” It starts to brew and doesn’t, but it still shows “brewing”. My 1st one, the pump died and they replaced it. This one is 1yr and 29 days old. 29 days past the warranty! Any other ideas? Please don’t make me go back to washing out a pot!!!
I have been having problems getting my K to brew. It also kept showing the largest of the cups blinking. After fooling with it for 2 days, I just gave the water tank a good bang on the top and presto! it worked. Hope it stays that way. Thanks for the suggestion!
I purchased by B70 from Costco in Oct 2010. Started having similar symptoms to those listed above, but do not take the water reservior out, just fill it with a measuring cup. I would have to unplug the unit to get it to go past the brew phase. Tried the reseating of the reservior just in case, but ended up taking it back to Costco today. Purchased another one, hope the issue does not resurface.
I have the platinum kuerig coffee machine, and does not brew. It makes all the sounds as if were gonna brew but nothing comes out. I tried taking the water tank out and out it back in but that did not work. What should i do?
Posted: 4/24/2011, OK I know this may not work for everyone. Mine would pull water from tank, heat it, and then shut off. Then it would do the above and not shut off but start filling the cup but return half of what it dispenced to the supply tank. 1. Now, in my thinking, I’m having multiple problems. If when dispencing, it returns some of the heated water back to the tank, then the valve from tank to reservoir isn’t seating or closing all the way(maybe scaling), so when pumping out the hot water it is returning some of it back to the tank, this is what it is suppose to do to keep from damaging the pump or other internals and a kind of warning something is wrong. 2. It heats the water, then it would shut off, if it needed de-scaling, maybe it is designed to shut down, and since it has other problems maybe the de-scaling alert doesn’t work, because mine has never alerted me of de-scaling is needed.(I only use spring water in mine)
So I followed Nates suggestion, and run a gallon of white vinegar thru the reservoir. The first few of times it started returning some to the tank, then it started working as it is suppose to. So run at least two tanks of vinegar thru it (if it will do it)then two tanks of water. I also filled the reservior half full of vinegar and used a pencil eraser and run some vinegar thru the valve on the bottom of the tank.
It seems to be working, I will get back when I see the results in a few days.
Nate, your solution is on target. We were having the same symptoms here with our B 70 Platinum and by pushing down hard on the filter holder inside the tank, the seal was tightened and water immediately began to flow into the unit forcefully which is how it worked when it was new. The Keurig is 13 months old now and started shutting off after every cup about two months ago. We don’t remove the tank except for cleaning and filter changes so I must have been a bit unlucky the last time I replaced it. Thanks for the tip.
This solution seemed to have worked, which is great. Thank you.
One thing I noticed was that water used to pour back into the reservoir. I put my finger over the pressure-relief mechanism and let it push through on an empty-cup brew. Then I blew some compressed air into it to clear out the channel. Finally, I reseated the reservoir in the manner described and we’re good to go.
Another thing to try is to take a paper clip and insert it in the needle to clear the grime or coffe grounds out. Run a couple cups of coffee through after that.
Thank you so much my Keurig is back to brewing normally!
My mom bought me a supposedly gently used B70 at a garage sale. Naturally, had the “NOT READY, then shut off” problem. Reseat of reservoir didn’t get it. Overfilled it, started getting some drip from the overflow nozzle. Took some tubing from an older Keurig we’d taken apart, and sucked water through the overflow nozzle ’til the booger came to life.
My Platinum model Keurig has had the same problem. Sucks water from the reservoir, begins to sound like it will brew, then does not. However, it really does not return ALL of the water to the reservoir. I have never used anything other than filtered water, which is 99% pure. So descaling shouldn’t even be an issue (but I descaled it anyway every month or so!). Eventually, all this water is sitting somewhere inside the machine though, right?! In any case, Keurig just replaced my platinum model brewer after tons of calls. Thankfully it was within the warranty period. Now that I have seen some of these suggestions, I will try them all. I wish Keurig had a way to open up the insides and clean the pins better than with a paperclip. I suspect grounds might be stuck up there. That is a real engineering FAIL!
Thanks, Nate! I was on my way to the dumpster, when I decided to try finding a solution online. I had already returned two units with the same problem and was planning to shift to another brand. Your solution worked after a couple tries. I admit the final try was more like a “slam” into the base, but it did work and continues to work. Amazing!
My B70 is 19 months old and began drawing water in and not dispensing it even though it said brewing. I descaled it twice, unclogged needles with paperclips, tried the compressed air trick – nothing helped. I called customer service today and they are honoring the warranty and sending me a new machine with a new warranty. I didn’t even ask (although I was planning to). If you are having trouble with your machine just give them a call. I figured a replacement even if it stops working in a few months at least doesn’t cost me anything more and I can use up all the Kcups I have in the house.
The problem is the check valve under the bottom plate. My wife kept removing the reservoir and getting the same problem. After getting a replacement under warranty I opened up the original and found air in the line. There is a seal that is created the first time the reservoir is primed. As mentioned here, filling with a pitcher solves the problem because it keeps water in the line and prevents air from getting into the line and causing the prime problem.
This is excellent — thanks Joe!
What a life saver! I was about to take my whole machine apart and try to fix or replace the water pump. I did one last google search and came across this simple fix…and VOILA! It worked.
Thanks so much!!!
Nate,
Thanks, it worked great!
Kitty
It is most likely a scaling issue. Descale your machine and you should be good to go.
You saved my boyfriend and I alot of headaches. We’re like a week past our warranty, so to see your fix and to have it work made us very happy.
Thanks!
I have learned that it also helps to remove the rubber seal and clean the pin with a toothbrush.

ok, after reading what everyone else said, and double checking the seal, mine is still not working. Mine says “not ready” when it gets turned on, then in a minute or two, it just turns off. No hot water or even a ready signal. I turned it off overnight, same thing the next morning. Never says ready and just turns off. Any thoughts?
This is so ridiculous. I bought my Keurig awhile back so my warranty is expired although I have not used this machine very much since I am an occasional coffee drinker and the only coffee drinker in my home (which is what attracted me to the machine in the first place). Having the same issue most of you have mentioned, the ‘not ready’ light is on, the noise sounds like it is attempting to heat the water (although it never does get heated up) and it eventually shuts off. The only other thing I get that no one has mentioned is there is a little circle on the LED display. I’ve got to say for the price I paid for the machine I found it ridiculous that so many people have run into this issue and have to tweak it to work. Ugh.
The issue with my machine is that it will draw water, heat it, and pour it into a cup no problem. Once I add the kcup, the machine draws water (or it sounds like it) then stops working. After a few minutes it’s done, and no coffee.
My Keurig B70 started having display issues along with interrupted brewing. Now its flashing Not Ready, it won’t turn off – display light is always on and flashing Not Ready. Is there any way to reset the programming?
just got a new keurig…………….. electical problem. They want me to send the k cup holder assembly and they are mailing new model. great cust service .
