“If you want to live your life in a creative way, as an artist, you have to not look back too much. You have to be willing to take whatever you’ve done and whoever you were and throw them away. What are we, anyway? Most of what we think we are is just a collection of likes and dislikes, habits, patterns. At the core of what we are is our values, and what decisions and actions we make reflect those values. That is why it’s hard doing interviews and being visible: As you are growing and changing, the more the outside world tries to reinforce an image of you that it thinks you are, the harder it is to continue to be an artist, which is why a lot of times, artists have to go, “Bye. I have to go. I’m going crazy and I’m getting out of here.” And they go and hibernate somewhere. Maybe later they re-emerge a little differently.”

I spent most of today working on one of my “learning” projects, Fifteenr.com. I’ve been really interested in Twitter the last few months, mostly due to its simplicity and the way people seem to gravitate to sharing the most inconsequential details of their daily lives.

The idea is very simple — followers of the Twitter user Fifteenr are eligible for “15 minutes of Internet fame” on the site. Kind of like a Woot.com of Steepandcheap.com for people looking for more followers. Ideally I’ll have a job every minutes that goes through all of the followers of Fifteenr and selects one for the main page. Some of my challenges today:

I still have pretty basic CSS skills so the site looks…well like I’m learning the ins and outs of CSS

My idea of getting the user’s main profile pic (not the thumbnail) has proven difficult

I spent all of my time fighting various random issues that I’m still just making API calls everytime the page loads. I haven’t even come up with an ER diagram for what the backend would need to be!

I spent a lot of time dicking around with Facebox, Jquery, Thickbox, etc…

The NFL draft was on…

It is an interesting side project for me — a nice departure from project management, SAP, and all things that I have to deal with in my real job. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
